Drop the bass - Minnesota Daily

It sounds like something out of “Portlandia”: a group of classically trained cellists playing elaborate, earnest covers of Britney Spears, Talib Kweli, Pantera and Kanye West. Probably with organic soy bows and fair-trade sheet music, am I right?

At first blush it might seem silly, and the Portland Cello Project isn’t the first to try it, but when it comes to rap-covering cello collectives, Portland residents will tell you it’s always best to buy local.

The Portland Cello Project (PCP for short) was formed in 2007 when a group of cellists gathered to rehearse classical music for a bar gig.

“Cellists just all really get along well. It’s kind of a weird stereotype,” said Douglas Jenkins, artistic director and founder of PCP.

Jenkins also said that forming a cello group is easy because of the instrument’s versatile range.

PCP was playing classical music at a few bars in Portland but didn’t receive much attention until they started playing pop covers.

“One day on a lark I was like, ‘Why don’t we do a Britney Spears song?’”Jenkins said, laughing. “So I wrote one of those out and that was immediately a good idea.”

Although PCP still performs a number of classical pieces â€" including original compositions â€"  they deal mainly in pop and hip-hop covers. Their latest album, “Homage,” showcases Jenkins’ obsession with late-period Kanye West. The record includes two covers from “Watch the Throne” and several other Kanye West tracks, including PCP’s recent profile-raising take on “All of the Lights.”

But the Portland Cello Project is not notable simply because they cover radio hits on orchestral instruments. After all, the ubiquitous Vitamin String Quartet has released hundreds of tribute albums dedicated to various successful acts from the last 30 years. But their renditions aren’t much more than carbon copies on strings, with all the personality of karaoke sound-alikes.

“It’s not an act of appropriation for us or trying to make things classical or anything,” he said. “We’re really just looking for that human inspiration inside of it and blowing it out in the way that we can with cellos and the ensemble.”

PCP has long since expanded their lineup to include drummers, a large horn section and occasionally a chorus to make their covers dynamic and fully realized. It helps when the original song features dense production with a sense of grandeur and movement, like “Toxic” or “H*A*M.”

When PCP covers hip-hop with dinkier production, like Lil Wayne’s “Lollipop,” Jenkins uses one section and devises a new work out of it.

“I think every university professor should make that an assignment,” he said. “To take a hip-hop theme and do a fugue with it or a canon because hip-hop hooks are great. Some are as good as any Baroque hook, if not better.”

It’s this enthusiasm that drives the Portland Cello Project. Their deep commitment to the source material results in covers that are stunningly accurate, but also have plenty of personality that goes beyond quirk.

“We will never be a heavy metal band, and we don’t pretend to. We certainly never pretend to be a hip-hop group,” Jenkins said. “[But we] love finding all of these different types of music and bringing them together to find that core inspiration.”

'The Voice' Season 2 Semifinals: TV Recap - Wall Street Journal (blog)

NBC
Christina Aguilera on “The Voice.”

Judges have their final two singers, both of whom sing one song each. For the contestants, the only competition is their fellow teammate. Who moves on is determined Tuesday evening. Tonight, each performer sang exactly like you would expect them to: like they only had one shot left, and they had to make it count.

Singer: Tony Lucca

Team: Adam

Song: “How You Like Me Now” by The Heavy

This is the second week in a row Lucca has made an impression on judges, and likely, the viewers at home. Last week’s cover of Britney Spears’s “Hit Me Baby One More Time” brought down the house, and this week’s cover of the lesser known hit by The Heavy proved no different. Wearing a natty dark suit, with a skinny tie, Tony Lucca came out guns blazing, with fancy footwork and a voice that set a very serious tone for the semifinals.

Singer: Erin Willett

Team: Blake

Song: “Without You” by David Guetta

Willett’s performance was the polar opposite of Lucca’s: somber, serious, emotional. Going with a power ballad like “Without You” is a risky move, but Willett gave a focused set, making sure to never over-sing and keeping her emotions in check until the end. When she was done, Willett let out a sight of relief, and a couple of tears from her eyes.

Singer: Chris Mann

Team: Christina

Song: “Ave Maria” by J.A. Bach and Charles Gounod

It was the moment many of Chris Mann’s fans had been waiting for, the opera singer doing what he does best: Singing opera. Mann gave his best performance of this season and showed everyone, if the pop singer route doesn’t work, Mann is more than ready for prime billing at an opera house anywhere in the world.

Singer: Jamar Rogers

Team: Ceelo

Song: “If You Don’t Know Me By Now” by Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes

In an interesting twist, Rogers asked Cee Lo if he himself could rearrange the the soul standard his coach picked out for him. Though skeptical at first, Cee Lo came around during the rehearsals, and the end result proved to show a different side of Rogers. Upbeat, loud, and all over the place, the fan-favorite Rogers went with a somber electronica/pop-like twist on the original and impressed the judges as much as Rogers has been impressing the fans at home.

Contestants Performance Interlude 1

Singers: Juliet Simms, Katrina Parker, Jamar Rogers, and Tony Lucca

Song: “All These Things That I’ve Done” by The Killers

Considering they’re all in competition with another and the high stakes at this point in the contest, each of the contestants are able to put their differences aside for the sake of a cohesive performance.

Singer: Jermaine Paul

Team: Blake

Song: “Open Arms” by The Journey

Jermaine’s background as a singer for Alicia Keys has put him in somewhat of an R&B box, so this week, he went a different route. Paul opted to go with the power ballad much like his teammate Willett did. For Paul, it worked and proved to the judges, he’s better than his resume. As Adam said, with that performance Paul proved he’s no longer a background singer.

Singer: Katrina Parker

Team: Adam

Song: “Killin’ Me Softly With His Song” by Roberta Flack (covered by Lauryn Hill and The Fugees )

Seems like the theme of the night is stepping out of comfort zones. With a hip-hop beat behind her, Parker attempted to channel her inner-Lauryn Hill. She was stiff for the most part, but vocally proved why she’s been able to survive this long in the competition. It was perhaps the first performance that didn’t blow anyone away, but it wasn’t the worst performance of the evening.

Blake Shelton Performance Interlude

Song: “Over”

Blake’s selection is his latest single from his 2011 acclaimed album, “Red River Blue.” The performance was a reminder of why Blake is one of the judges, his voice roared on the country ballad.

Singer: Lindsey Pavao

Team: Christina

Song: “Skinny Love” by Bon Iver

Pavao was taking a chance to do such a lo-fi song at this stage of the competition, but to Aguilera’s credit, and as Blake pointed out, the performance was the kind of song Pavao sang to get her this far. She sang the gentle, folksy Bon Iver song with a grit that made it tough for her coach to pick a final winner.

Contestants Performance Interlude II

Singers: Jermaine Paul, Chris Mann, Erin Willett, and Lindsey Pavao

Song: “Edge of Glory” by Lady Gaga

Team Blake and Team Christina also get along and sing beautiful music together. The clash of styles between Mann, Paul, Willett, and Pavao make for a much more interesting mix than the previous contestants performance.

Singer: Juliet Simms

Team: Ceelo

Song: “It’s A Man’s, Man’s World” by James Brown

The producers of “The Voice” had to know what they were doing by putting Simms last. It was not only the best performance of the night, it was, arguably, the best performance by any singer all season. Her teammate, Rogers, did well, but he did not do what Simms do, and at this point, it doesn’t seem like anyone else will be able to do what Simms has done. The competition is hers to lose.

The Wanted sort of sorry about Christina Aguilera, now have dirt on Britney Spears - Entertainment Weekly

Sorry, but: Oops, they did it again!

(Again, so sorry.) After calling Voice popster Christina Aguilera “a total bitch” in a radio interview last week and semi-apologizing for it, the British boy band the Wanted are now gossiping about Britney Spears behind her back â€" literally.

The group showed up on New York’s Fresh 102.7 this morning to talk about their experiences with Spears, whom they opened for in Manchester last fall.

“We signed a confidentiality thing that we should never say anything about what happened, but let’s tell it anyway,” said the Wanted’s Tom Parker, the same dude who lobbed the b-word at Xtina.

Fellow member Siva Kaneswaran took the baton from there: ”I was in the hallway with me tour manager. Basically we were looking with a laptop, trying to get wifi… facing the middle of the hallway. [Britney's] bouncers came down with her and told us to face the wall.”

“As Miss Spears is walking through,” Parker added. ”We’re like, come on!”

“We turned around,” continued Kaneswaran, “and I faced a wall for about 10 seconds until she got really far away.”

Well, then! To check out the entire interview from this morning, head over to the Fresh 102.7 site to watch the video for yourself.

Britney Spears Sells Home: Other Recent Celeb Mansion Purchases And Listings - International Business Times

Britney Spears has reportedly sold her Beverly Hills home for $4.25 million. The pop-princess has been trying to sell the mansion since 2008.Though the price of the sale is quite high, it's nothing compared to the value of other celebrity homes. According to Zap2It, Spears actually paid $6.8 million for the lavish home, which she barely lived in. After purchasing the mansion in 2007, Spears was in an out of psychiatric institutions and suffered from from a mental breakdown. Perhaps she was so anxious to sell the plush pad because it holds too many bad memories.

This past year, a number of pricey celebrity mansions entered the housing maket while others were purchased by the likes of Justin Bieber or Tom Brady. Here are the most expensive recent rents/buys and asking prices of celebrity homes!

Britney Spears Circus era 2008

For every Britney Spears album released, there seem to have been at least handful of recorded tunes that didn’t make the cut. The latest such shelved mystery is “This Kiss”, which is doing the rounds online and is said to be an unreleased track from the Circus era (i.e. it was recorded sometime around 2008). It’s a cutesy little number with squeaky, blipping synths, laser gun noises and vocal effects that makes Spears sound as if she’s singing underwater. Lyrically, “This Kiss” is pretty basic (“Right when I saw the door, you walked in an I fell to the floor” is just one sampling.) But the tune should give Brit’s fans something to buzz about during her latest between-albums lull. Listen below!

What do you think of “This Kiss”? Are you surprised it didn’t wind up on Britney’s Circus LP?

MORE Unreleased Brit Brit! Enjoy This Kiss HERE! - PerezHilton.com

A previously unreleased Britney Spears track called This Kiss, apparently recorded during the Circus sessions in 2008, has made its way onto the internet, and although the production is more reminiscent of her more recent direction with Femme Fatale, the track is pure old school for the pop star!

Give it a listen (above)!

Would fit like a glove onto her earlier albums, right?

But we certainly can understand why it didn't make it make it onto the album!

Happy to have it now, though!

How about U?? Ya dig?

Britney Spears unreleased song 'The Kiss' appears online - Digital Spy

A previously unheard Britney Spears song has appeared online.

The track, titled 'The Kiss', was originally recorded as part of the sessions for Spears's sixth studio album Circus, which was released in 2008.

Britney Spears

Lyrics include: "This kiss, this kiss, this kiss, just wants you again. This kiss, this kiss, this kiss, just loves you my friend."

The song missed out on making the final Circus album, which went on to reach number one on the US Billboard 200 and number four on the UK chart.

Meanwhile, Spears's fiancé Jason Trawick was recently approved as her co-conservator ahead of her alleged $15m (£9.4m) fee to appear as a judge on the next series of The X Factor USA.

Original production proves that Britney Spears, Jesus Christ a good match - CU Columbia Spectator

In my ninth grade confirmation class, the very first thing we learned was that “Britney Spears” is an anagram for “Presbyterians.” Saturday night, I was treated to another undeniable link between two of history’s biggest celebritiesâ€"Britney and Jesusâ€"with the production, “SPEARS: The Gospel According to Britney.”

Given all the hype surrounding the show, which sold out the limited space in the Glicker-Milstein Theater in under a minute, it was hard to know what to expect and how high my hopes should be. However, “Spears” delivered in high fashion.

The tone of the show was incredibly appropriate for a story which has so much potential to go wrongâ€"plenty of fun, as befits the music, but surprisingly reverent in places.
And yes, the music worked.

In fact, part of the fun was how absolutely jaw-droppingly perfect some of the numbers were. Never in my life did I think I would hear the song “Lucky” sang about Our Lord and Savior and feel genuine emotion, nor would I have thought that seeing a post-resurrection Jesus & Co. sing and dance to “Stronger” would be such riotous fun (though in retrospect, that’s because I wasn’t creative enough to think of it). Consisting of 22 songs from vintage to modern Britney, the performance managed to make each number memorable.

The musical arrangements by Max Druz, CC ’14, should not be overlooked in this accomplishment, as his renderings both preserved and adjusted each song to adapt to the tone of the story. The lyrics were effectively split among characters and created a cohesive, engaging story.

The band’s only slightly overpowering the vocals at times, and the whimsical and expressive choreography told the story in place of traditional dialogue. The production team also made excellent use of space in such a cramped theater, creating hellishly startling effects by banging on the cagey railings lining the seats. And oh God, the performers.
Alia Munsch, BC ’12, brought down the house as the Devil, not just with show-stopping vocals but lithe, agile dancing.

It’s to Ben Ciordia’s credit that he didn’t let Munsch overshadow his Judas, and let loose as he sold Jesus to Pontius Pilate in “I Wanna Go” and fleshed out his character with emotional depth in “Everytime.”

Michael Carter, CC ’14, came off as a scruffy, indie-rock sort of Jesus: Though his voice isn’t without technical flaws, it’s hard to imagine a “Where Are You Now”-soundtracked crucifixion different from his raw, moving rendition.

The only real complaint to raise with the show is a slight lack of clarity. Although the narrative arc is familiar to many, it might have been better to have some sort of opening monologue that laid out which pieces of the Bible story were going to be performed. Even as a person who’s read the Bible (I went through confirmation, remember?), it was occasionally hard to follow the action, especially at the beginning.

Still, little can be done to deny the star power of “SPEARS,” which manages to tackle the marriage of Spears and Christ in a way that respects both deities and keeps the audience fully engaged and entertained.

Zing! Robin Williams Chimes in on Britney Spears' Conservatorship - E! Online

Robin Williams, Britney Spears Kevin Mazur/WireImage

Robin Williams ain't gonna be hunting for goodwill from Britney Spears anytime soon.

We caught up with the legendary funnyman at the Comedy Awards on Saturday in New York City and noticed that the Oscar winner seems to have a matrimonial streak running through his life at the moment: He recently got hitched to graphic designer Susan Schneider, and he's currently set to star in the ensemble comedy The Big Wedding, about a divorced couple pretending to be married en route to their son's wedding day.

Natch, this prompted us to pose a pop quiz to the quick-witted comedian about the biggest spouse-themed, hot-button topic currently boggling all of pop culture: that Britney Spears' fiancé, Jason Trawick, was recently named her co-conservator.

Is this the matrimonial wave of the future? Or a sign of the apocalypse?

MORE: Jason Trawick Not Just Britney Spears' Fiancéâ€"Now He's Co-Conservator!

"One of the signs of the apocalypse," he cracked to us. "And I think she's on the calendar of 'Girls of the Apocalypse.'"

Eeep. Looks like that Sports Illustrated swimsuit calendar on our wall now has some competition!

Spears, of course, will now fall under the care of Trawick, whoâ€"per judge's ordersâ€"will be in charge of overseeing his fiancée's personal, day-to-day affairs. Her father, Jamie Spears, and attorney Andrew Wallett will continue to manage the 30-year-old pop star's finances, including control of her estate.

"That's kind of a double bill," Williams says of Trawick's appointment. "It's like having your dealer as your therapist."

Ka-pow! Ever doubt that Williams serves up some of the tastiest bons mots around?

MORE: No Foolingâ€"Robin Williams Is Remarried!

Spears chatter notwithstanding, Williams was also happy to tell us which of his past movies he'd love to revisit for a sequel. And, curiously, it also involves an element of marriage.

"The Birdcage would be wonderful," he revealed. "I'd love to do that againâ€"it'd be great. It's just a question of finding the right way. Especially now, with the whole issue around gay marriage."

Quite the timely hook, then?

"Just a touch, yeah," he said. "So maybe we'll have to see if they can write it."

Hey, anything that reteams Williams with Nathan Lane, we're so there. Maybe there'll be room on the soundtrack for a ditty...from Spears?

Celebrity Real Estate: Jeter, Britney and Meg Ryan hit the market - msnbc.com (blog)

By Erika Riggs, Zillow

This week in celebrity real estate Yankees' star Derek Jeter relisted his bachelor pad penthouse for $18 million, Meg Ryan is hoping for a buyer for her Bel-Air home and Britney Spears' estate may have finally sold.

Derek Jeter relists New York City bachelor pad for $17.95 million

Want to live like Derek Jeter?

For close to $18 million you can.

The Yankees shortstop has recently listed his enormous bachelor pad in the Trump World Tower for sale â€" $2 million less than when he listed the home previously in 2010. Talk about connections; Jeter bought the Manhattan home directly from Donald Trump in 2001 for $12.72 million.

Reportedly the superstar is looking to downsize from the 5,425-square-foot penthouse. With a 30,000 custom estate on the waterfront in Tampa, Fla., listing agent Carrie Chiang, of the Corcoran Group told the NY Post that Jeter just wants a "pied-à-terre apartment" in New York.

Jeter's apartment features plenty of bachelor-approved features: a pool table, Pac-Man game, wood-burning fireplace and control system for the audio, video and lighting in the home. Ultra-suede wall paper cover the walls and hardwood floors are featured throughout. Views of the Manhattan skyline are visible from the floor-to-ceiling windows.

Meg Ryan's Home is Back on the Bel-Air Market

Zillow

Meg Ryan's gracious 1931 Spanish home is back on the market.

Could third time be a charm? Hopefully it is for Meg Ryan, who just relisted her home on the Bel-Air real estate market for $11.4 million.

According to the property's price history, this is the third time Ryan has listed the home since she bought it in 2000. Perhaps the news of home values rising and a housing bottom in sight makes her optimistic the time is right to find a buyer.

Best known for her roles in rom-coms like "When Harry Met Sally," "Sleepless in Seattle" and "You've Got Mail," Ryan purchased the home for $8.5 million. She first listed the home for sale in October 2008 for $19.5 million, but took it down in February, only to relist it again in October 2009 for a decreased price of $14.2 million.

With no takers, the blonde actress decided to go the landlord route, offering up the classic Spanish-style home as a $40,000-per-month rental. Rumor has it that Diane Keaton rented the home, but has moved on, leading Ryan to try her luck at selling again.

The 6-bedroom, 7-bath home has 6,877-square-feet of living space, two family rooms, a film-screening room, separate bar off the kitchen and enormous master suite.

4 years and 6 price cuts later, Britney Spears' home sells

Zillow

After several years on the market, Britney Spears' home has sold.

Finally, the home connected to singer Britney Spears' worst moments in 2007 could be behind her.

Reeling after her divorce in 2006, Spears bought herself a Studio City home in January 2007 for $6.750 million. It was supposed to be a place of solace, but it became ground zero for the paparazzi and Spears' soon-to-come tumultuous, headline-grabbing year.

In September 2008, Spears decided a new chapter was in order and she listed her Summit Circle home for sale for $7.9 million.

Four years, six price cuts and a few different brokerages later, Spears' property finally found a buyer and is listed on Zillow as a pending sale. The current listing price? $4,466,150.

Why did Spears' home linger on the market so long?

"Unfortunately," explained Mauricio Umansky, Zillow real estate expert and co-founder of The Agency, "she bought it at the top of the market and listed it for so high right after the market crash in 2008 [it was] a bad marketing strategy."

According to Umansky, the home should have been listed below the price Spears purchased it for, and if potential buyers balked, the listing agent should be able to back up the high price.

"Her [Spears'] celebrity status should be worth some money, " said Umansky. "Playing that up and marketing the home right may have been able to get the home to sell in the low sixes."

Built in 2001, the Mediterranean-style villa is located in the high-security, prestigious Summit neighborhood. The 5-bedroom, 6-bath home has an enormous master suite with his-and-her bathrooms and a fireplace.
